At Sacral Function Therapy, we provide trauma-informed occupational therapy for pelvic health that recognizes the connection between the nervous system, pelvic function, emotional well-being, and daily life. Trauma and chronic stress can contribute to pelvic pain, tension, bladder and bowel dysfunction, sexual health concerns, and difficulty feeling safe or connected within the body. Using a client-centered and collaborative approach, treatment focuses on restoring comfort, function, body awareness, nervous system regulation, and participation in meaningful daily activities while prioritizing consent, autonomy, and emotional safety throughout the healing process.
We support continence by addressing the physical, behavioral, environmental, and lifestyle factors that impact bladder and bowel function. OT helps individuals improve pelvic floor coordination, body awareness, toileting habits, daily routines, mobility, and nervous system regulation to reduce symptoms such as urgency, frequency, leakage, constipation, and pelvic discomfort. Treatment is individualized and focused on helping clients regain confidence, independence, and participation in meaningful daily activities without the limitations or anxiety often associated with incontinence.
We support sexuality and intimacy through a holistic, trauma-informed, and gender-affirming approach that addresses the physical, emotional, sensory, and relational factors impacting meaningful connection and participation. Treatment may include support for pelvic health concerns, body awareness, nervous system regulation, communication skills, education on safety and consent, and guidance in navigating intimacy, relationships, and dating after injury, illness, trauma, or major life transitions. OT also supports community reintegration and confidence in social participation while honoring each individual’s identity, autonomy, values, and goals related to sexuality, intimacy, and overall well-being.
We provide pain management for chronic pelvic pain (CPP) and other forms of pain dysregulation by addressing the connection among the nervous system, pelvic floor function, movement patterns, stress, and daily activities. OT helps individuals develop strategies for nervous system regulation, body awareness, activity modification, pacing, relaxation, and self-management to reduce pain and improve participation in meaningful daily life, work, relationships, and self-care activities. We use a combination of manual therapy, exercise, and education to help patients achieve their goals.
Treatment may address sensory sensitivities, pain, pressure, muscle tension, bladder and bowel dysfunction, and difficulty recognizing bodily cues through individualized strategies that promote relaxation, body awareness, and functional movement.
Biofeedback can provide real-time information about pelvic floor muscle activity, helping clients build greater control, confidence, and connection with their bodies in a supportive environment. We currently offer mirror visual biofeedback to address strengthening, lengthening, and coordination of the pelvic floor muscles.
This approach improves motor control, coordination, proprioception, posture, breathing patterns, and body awareness to support greater independence and participation in daily life. Neuromuscular re-education can benefit individuals experiencing pelvic floor dysfunction, chronic pelvic pain, incontinence, postpartum concerns, orthopedic injuries, neurological conditions, brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, and other conditions that impact movement, sensation, and functional performance.
We utilize exercise and therapeutic activities to improve strength, flexibility, coordination, endurance, body awareness, and functional movement needed for everyday life. In pelvic health care, therapeutic exercise may support pelvic floor coordination, posture, breathing mechanics, mobility, pain management, and nervous system regulation while helping individuals safely return to meaningful activities such as work, self-care, exercise, caregiving, intimacy, and community participation.
All clients are provided with appropriate recommendations and training for durable medical equipment (DME) and adaptive equipment (AE) to support safety, independence, comfort, and participation in daily activities. In pelvic health care, we may recommend and educate clients on adaptive strategies, positioning supports, toileting aids, mobility equipment, sensory tools, or home modifications to reduce pain, conserve energy, improve accessibility, and support bladder, bowel, and functional needs across home, work, and community environments.
Our home modification consultation helps individuals with disabilities or chronic conditions to live safely and independently in their homes while reducing strain. We provide recommendations and assistance with home modifications for functionality or aging-in-place, such as grab bars, ramps, lifts, accessible bedrooms and bathrooms, etc. Our goal is to improve safety, accessibility, comfort, and functional participation in daily life.
